Advocacy at Grandma’s Hands is Giving Voice to the Caregivers Who Hold Families Together

At Grandma’s Hands, we believe that advocacy is more than speaking up it’s standing beside the families who hold our communities together. Across Philadelphia and beyond, grandparents and older relatives are stepping in to raise children affected by circumstances such as substance abuse, incarceration, mental health challenges, and poverty. These caregivers are doing sacred work, yet far too often they do it without the resources, recognition, or rights they deserve. Our advocacy efforts are rooted in one truth: our families matter. We work to ensure that their experiences and voices are concerned when shaping the systems that serve them; such as schools, social services, healthcare, and government. Through community education, coalition building, and direct support, we push for equitable policies that strengthen kinship care families rather than leaving them to navigate challenges alone.

We advocate for access to financial assistance, affordable housing, mental health services, and fair custody laws. We stand with caregivers in courtrooms, in schools, and in community spaces helping them navigate complex systems while ensuring their rights and dignity are protected. But our advocacy goes beyond policy; it’s also about transformation. We raise awareness about the power of intergenerational caregiving, challenge stereotypes, and celebrate the resilience and wisdom that grandparents and older relatives bring to family life.Every workshop, every partnership, and every conversation is part of a larger movement to create a world where no caregiver has to choose between survival and stability, and where every child has the opportunity to thrive.

At Grandma’s Hands, Advocacy is Love in Action—the voice that speaks for justice, the hands that reach out in solidarity, and the heart that refuses to let these families go unseen.
